Craft Gin Club specially imports Italy’s Bordiga Occitan Gin, made from 100-year-old recipe, for its May Gin of the Month

  • Occitan Gin comes to the UK from a 130-year-old family distillery in the Italian Alps of Piedmont
  • Top London mixologists craft exclusive cocktails to commemorate the occasion
  • Two centuries of experience meet handpicked Alpine botanicals in this Italian treasure

Craft Gin Club is thrilled to feature Bordiga’s Occitan Gin as its May Gin of the Month. The gin has been specially imported for the occasion, making its exclusive UK off-trade debut through Craft Gin Club.

Distilled from a recipe hand-written in 1900 by master distiller Pietro Bordiga, Occitan’s classic botanicals include juniper, angelica and coriander which are hand-picked in the Italian Alps. After generations of thriving in difficult conditions, these botanicals are amongst the most flavourful in the world.

These ingredients are combined with cardamom, lemon peel and orange peel in the distillery’s antique copper still to create a refined and surprisingly complex gin with a clean, elegant taste.

Lucia Buysschaert of Bordiga Distillery says,

“Pietro Bordiga created a product that felt right for him; it’s concentrated on the juniper berries, which are so special when they’re grown in these mountains. They have an aroma and a taste that’s so unique. He focussed on that, and that’s the basis of everything.”

To mark its UK debut, mixologists from two renowned London cocktail joints, Chelsea’s Ritorno and Covent Garden’s Freud Bar, created four original Occitan cocktails especially for Craft Gin Club members to enjoy. (See two recipes below).

The cocktails also make excellent use of Bordiga’s highly regarded vermouths. In addition to a 70cl bottle of Bordiga’s Occitan Gin, Craft Gin Club members received a bottle of Bordiga Vermouth Bianco, which takes 40 days to craft using traditional methods.

John Burke, co-founder and commercial director of Craft Gin Club, says:

“This seemingly modest gin blew our blind tasting panel away, standing head and shoulders above more outwardly complex spirits. It’s a classic, and we’re thrilled to introduce UK gin fans to this amazing Italian brand.”

John Hulme, co-founder and managing director of Craft Gin Club, adds:

“We can’t wait to see what our members think of Bordiga’s Occitan Gin. It’s already made a big impression on London’s cocktail scene, and we know that gin lovers across the UK will appreciate the special something this gin brings to every serve.”
