Craft Gin Club is thrilled to feature Bordiga’s Occitan Gin as its May Gin of the Month. The gin has been specially imported for the occasion, making its exclusive UK off-trade debut through Craft Gin Club.
Distilled from a recipe hand-written in 1900 by master distiller Pietro Bordiga, Occitan’s classic botanicals include juniper, angelica and coriander which are hand-picked in the Italian Alps. After generations of thriving in difficult conditions, these botanicals are amongst the most flavourful in the world.
These ingredients are combined with cardamom, lemon peel and orange peel in the distillery’s antique copper still to create a refined and surprisingly complex gin with a clean, elegant taste.
Lucia Buysschaert of Bordiga Distillery says,
“Pietro Bordiga created a product that felt right for him; it’s concentrated on the juniper berries, which are so special when they’re grown in these mountains. They have an aroma and a taste that’s so unique. He focussed on that, and that’s the basis of everything.”
To mark its UK debut, mixologists from two renowned London cocktail joints, Chelsea’s Ritorno and Covent Garden’s Freud Bar, created four original Occitan cocktails especially for Craft Gin Club members to enjoy. (See two recipes below).
The cocktails also make excellent use of Bordiga’s highly regarded vermouths. In addition to a 70cl bottle of Bordiga’s Occitan Gin, Craft Gin Club members received a bottle of Bordiga Vermouth Bianco, which takes 40 days to craft using traditional methods.

45ml Occitan Gin
20ml fresh lemon juice
10ml sugar syrup
2 slices cucumber
Sprig of rosemary, to garnish
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the cucumber slices with the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup. Add ice and shake well, then strain into a cocktail coupe or a martini glass. Strip the rosemary and drop the individual leaves in a lattice pattern on the top of the drink.

30ml Occitan Gin
15ml Bordiga Vermouth Bianco
10ml Zucca (or other rabarbaro liqueur)
5ml agave syrup
5ml cream of pistachio
1 tsp natural yogurt
Aranciata San Pellegrino, to top up
Amaretti biscuit, to garnish
Combine the first six ingredients in a shaker packed with ice and shake again. Strain the mixture into a stemmed glass filled with ice. Garnish with an Amaretti biscuit, either by crumbling some over the top or suspending a whole biscuit (or two!) above your glass.
